Bhriguvalli · Anuvaka 10

Verses

  1. Verse 1

    na kañcana vasatau pratyācakṣīta | tadvratam | tasmādyayā kayā ca vidhayā bahvannaṃ prāpnuyāt | arādhyasmā annamityācakṣate | etadvai mukhato'nnaṃrāddham | mukhato'smā annaṃrādhyate | etadvai madhyato'nnaṃrāddham | madhyato'smā annaṃrādhyate | edadvā antato'nnaṃrāddham | antato'smā anna rādhyate || 1||

    Meaning

    One should not turn away anyone from one's dwelling; that is the vow. Therefore, by whatever means, one should obtain abundant food; (the wise) say, 'food has been made ready for him.' If this food is given in the best manner, food is rendered to him in the best manner; if given in the middling manner, food is rendered to him in the middling manner; if given in the lowest manner, food is rendered to him in the lowest manner. (Thus it returns to the giver according to his giving.)

  2. Verse 2

    ya evaṃ veda | kṣema iti vāci | yogakṣema iti prāṇāpānayoḥ | karmeti hastayoḥ | gatiriti pādayoḥ | vimuktiriti pāyau | iti mānuṣīḥ samājñāḥ | atha daivīḥ | tṛptiriti vṛṣṭau | balamiti vidyuti || 2||

    Meaning

    (This holds) for him who knows thus. (Brahman is to be meditated upon) as preservation (kshema) in speech; as acquisition-and-preservation (yoga-kshema) in the out-breath and in-breath; as action in the hands; as movement in the feet; as evacuation in the anus. These are the meditations on the human plane. Now the divine ones: as satisfaction in rain; as power in lightning —

  3. Verse 3

    yaśa iti paśuṣu | jyotiriti nakṣatreṣu | prajātiramṛtamānanda ityupasthe | sarvamityākāśe | tatpratiṣṭhetyupāsīta | pratiṣṭhāvān bhavati | tanmaha ityupāsīta | mahānbhavati | tanmana ityupāsīta | mānavānbhavati || 3||

    Meaning

    — as fame in cattle; as light in the stars; as procreation, immortality, and bliss in the generative organ; as the all in ether (akasha). One should meditate on That as the support (pratishtha) — one becomes possessed of support. One should meditate on That as the great (mahah) — one becomes great. One should meditate on That as mind (manas) — one becomes honoured.

  4. Verse 4

    tannama ityupāsīta | namyante'smai kāmāḥ | tadbrahmetyupāsīta | brahmavānbhavati | tadbrahmaṇaḥ parimara ityupāsīta | paryeṇaṃ mriyante dviṣantaḥ sapatnāḥ | pari ye'priyā bhrātṛvyāḥ | sa yaścāyaṃ puruṣe | yaścāsāvāditye | sa ekaḥ || 4||

    Meaning

    One should meditate on That as adoration (namas) — desires bow down before him. One should meditate on That as Brahman — he becomes possessed of Brahman. One should meditate on That as the destruction of (what surrounds) Brahman (brahmanah parimara) — around him die his hating rivals, and the unfriendly kinsmen whom he dislikes. He who is here in the man, and He who is yonder in the sun — He is one.

  5. Verse 5

    sa ya evaṃvit | asmāllokātpretya | etamannamayamātmānamupasaṅkramya | etaṃ prāṇamayamātmānamupasaṅkramya | etaṃ manomayamātmānamupasaṅkramya | etaṃ vijñānamayamātmānamupasaṅkramya | etamānandamayamātmānamupasaṅkramya | imāṃllokankāmānnī kāmarūpyanusañcaran | etat sāma gāyannāste | hā 3 vu hā 3 vu hā 3 vu || 5||

    Meaning

    He who knows thus, on departing from this world, reaching in turn this self made of food, this self made of breath, this self made of mind, this self made of understanding, this self made of bliss — ranging over these worlds, eating what he wishes and assuming what forms he wishes, he sits singing this Saman (chant of triumph): 'Ha-vu! Ha-vu! Ha-vu!'

  6. Verse 6

    ahamannamahamannamahamannam | ahamannādo'3hamannādo'3ahamannādaḥ | ahaṃślokakṛdahaṃślokakṛdahaṃślokakṛt | ahamasmi prathamajā ṛtā3sya | pūrvaṃ devebhyo'mṛtasya nā3bhāi | yo mā dadāti sa ideva mā3a'vāḥ | ahamannamannamadantamā3dmi | ahaṃ viśvaṃ bhuvanamabhyabhavā3m | suvarna jyotīḥ | ya evaṃ veda | ityupaniṣat || 6||

    Meaning

    'I am food, I am food, I am food! I am the eater of food, the eater of food, the eater of food! I am the maker of the (uniting) verse, the maker of the verse, the maker of the verse! I am the first-born of the cosmic order (rita), prior to the gods, in the navel of immortality! Whoever gives me, he alone preserves me! I, who am food, eat the eater of food! I have overcome the whole world!' — He who knows this (shines) as the golden light. Such, indeed, is the secret teaching (upanishad).
