About this scripture

The Taittiriya Upanishad, belonging to the Krishna (Black) Yajurveda, is in three vallis (books). The Shikshavalli treats phonetics, a series of sacred meditations (upasanas), and the celebrated convocation to the departing student — सत्यं वद, धर्मं चर ("speak the truth, practise dharma"). The Brahmananda- (or Ananda-) valli unfolds the Self through five sheaths (koshas) — those made of food, breath, mind, understanding, and bliss — and works out the graded calculus of bliss culminating in the bliss of Brahman. The Bhriguvalli tells how Bhrigu, taught by his father Varuna, discovers Brahman successively as food, breath, mind, understanding, and finally bliss (ananda). The Shikshavalli opens with the शं नो मित्रः shanti and the Ananda- and Bhrigu-vallis with the सह नाववतु shanti. The Devanagari is given with strict IAST and a researched per-section meaning gloss in English and Hindi.
