तृतीयमुण्डके द्वितीयः खण्डः

Mundaka 3 · Khanda 2

Verses

  1. Verse 1

sa vedaitatparamaṃ brahma dhāma yatra viśvaṃ nihitaṃ bhāti śubhram | upāsate puruṣaṃ ye hyakāmāste śukrametadativartanti dhīrāḥ || 1||

    Meaning

He knows that supreme abode of Brahman, in which the universe rests, shining pure. The wise who, free from desire, worship the Purusha, transcend this seed (of rebirth).

  2. Verse 2

kāmān yaḥ kāmayate manyamānaḥ sa kāmabhirjāyate tatra tatra | paryāptakāmasya kṛtātmanastu ihaiva sarve pravilīyanti kāmāḥ || 2||

    Meaning

He who broods over desires, thinking (of them), is born here and there through his desires. But for one whose desires are fulfilled (in the Self) and whose Self is realized, all desires dissolve even here.

  3. Verse 3

nāyamātmā pravacanena labhyo na medhayā na bahunā śrutena | yamevaiṣa vṛṇute tena labhyastasyaiṣa ātmā vivṛṇute tanūṃ svām || 3||

    Meaning

This Self cannot be attained by study, nor by intellect, nor by much hearing. He whom the Self chooses — by him alone is It attained; to him the Self reveals Its own form.

  4. Verse 4

nāyamātmā balahīnena labhyo na ca pramādāttapaso vāpyaliṅgāt | etairupāyairyatate yastu vidvāṃstasyaiṣa ātmā viśate brahmadhāma || 4||

    Meaning

This Self cannot be attained by the weak, nor through heedlessness, nor by tapas devoid of the right marks (sannyasa). But the wise one who strives by these means — his Self enters the abode of Brahman.

  5. Verse 5

saṃprāpyainamṛṣayo jñānatṛptāḥ kṛtātmāno vītarāgāḥ praśāntāḥ | te sarvagaṃ sarvataḥ prāpya dhīrā yuktātmānaḥ sarvamevāviśanti || 5||

    Meaning

Having attained Him, the sages, content with knowledge, their selves perfected, free from passion, tranquil — having reached the all-pervading on every side, the wise, with self-controlled minds, enter into the All itself.

  6. Verse 6

vedāntavijñānasuniścitārthāḥ saṃnyāsayogādyatayaḥ śuddhasattvāḥ | te brahmalokeṣu parāntakāle parāmṛtāḥ parimucyanti sarve || 6||

    Meaning

Those ascetics who have well ascertained the truth through the knowledge of Vedanta, of purified nature, through the yoga of renunciation — they, in the worlds of Brahman, at the end of time, being supremely immortal, are all completely liberated.

  7. Verse 7

gatāḥ kalāḥ pañcadaśa pratiṣṭhā devāśca sarve pratidevatāsu | karmāṇi vijñānamayaśca ātmā pare'vyaye sarve ekībhavanti || 7||

    Meaning

The fifteen parts (of the body) go to their (cosmic) supports, and all the senses (devas) to their corresponding deities; the works and the knowing self — all become one in the supreme, undecaying (Brahman).

  8. Verse 8

yathā nadyaḥ syandamānāḥ samudre'staṃ gacchanti nāmarūpe vihāya | tathā vidvān nāmarūpādvimuktaḥ parātparaṃ puruṣamupaiti divyam || 8||

    Meaning

As flowing rivers disappear into the sea, giving up name and form, so the knower, freed from name and form, attains the divine Purusha, higher than the high.

  9. Verse 9

sa yo ha vai tatparamaṃ brahma veda brahmaiva bhavati nāsyābrahmavitkule bhavati | tarati śokaṃ tarati pāpmānaṃ guhāgranthibhyo vimukto'mṛto bhavati || 9||

    Meaning

He who knows that supreme Brahman becomes Brahman itself. In his line none is born who does not know Brahman. He crosses over sorrow, crosses over sin; freed from the knots of the heart, he becomes immortal.

  10. Verse 10

tadetadṛcā'bhyuktam | kriyāvantaḥ śrotriyā brahmaniṣṭhāḥ svayaṃ juhvata ekarṣiṃ śraddhayantaḥ | teṣāmevaitāṃ brahmavidyāṃ vadeta śirovrataṃ vidhivadyaistu cīrṇam || 10||

    Meaning

This is declared by the Rik verse: those who perform works, who are learned in the Vedas, established in Brahman, who with faith offer oblations to the sole seer (Agni/the One) — to them alone should one teach this knowledge of Brahman, (to those) by whom the Head-Vow (shirovrata) has been duly observed.

  11. Verse 11

tadetatsatyamṛṣiraṅgirāḥ purovāca naitadacīrṇavrato'dhīte | namaḥ paramaṛṣibhyo namaḥ paramaṛṣibhyaḥ || 11||

    Meaning

This is the truth which the seer Angiras declared of old. One who has not observed the vow does not study (deserve) it. Salutation to the supreme seers! Salutation to the supreme seers!
