About this scripture
The Mundaka Upanishad, belonging to the Atharvaveda, is a verse Upanishad in three "mundakas" (sections, lit. "shavings") of two khandas each. It opens with the teaching of two kinds of knowledge — the lower (apara, the Vedas and their auxiliaries and rituals) and the higher (para), by which alone the imperishable Brahman is realized. It gives the celebrated images of sparks from a fire and the two birds on one tree, and the words सत्यमेव जयते ("truth alone triumphs"), India's national motto. The Devanagari is given with strict IAST and a researched per-mantra meaning gloss in English and Hindi.
