Second Prashna

Verses

  1. Verse 1

    atha hainaṃ bhārgavo vaidarbhiḥ papraccha | bhagavan katyeva devāḥ prajāṃ vidhārayante katara etat prakāśayante kaḥ punareṣāṃ variṣṭha iti || 2.1||

    Meaning

    Then Bhargava Vaidarbhi asked him: 'Lord, how many gods (powers) support a creature? Which of them illumine it? And which again is the greatest among them?'

  2. Verse 2

    tasmai sa hovācākāśo ha vā eṣa devo vāyuragnirāpaḥ pṛthivī vāṅmanaścakṣuḥ śrotraṃ ca | te prakāśyābhivadanti vayametadbāṇamavaṣṭabhya vidhārayāmaḥ || 2.2||

    Meaning

    To him he said: 'Ether is verily such a power, and air, fire, water, earth, speech, mind, eye, and ear. Having illumined (the body), they declare: "We hold up and support this body (frame)."'

  3. Verse 3

    tān variṣṭhaḥ prāṇa uvāca | mā mohamāpadyatha ahamevaitat pañcadhā''tmānaṃ pravibhajyaitadbāṇamavaṣṭabhya vidhārayāmīti te'śraddadhānā babhūvuḥ || 2.3||

    Meaning

    To them the greatest, Prana, said: 'Do not fall into delusion. It is I alone who, dividing myself fivefold, hold up and support this body.' They were incredulous.

  4. Verse 4

    so'bhimānādūrdhvamutkrāmata iva tasminnutkrāmatyathetare sarva evotkrāmante tasmiṃśca pratiṣṭhamāne sarva eva pratiṣṭhante | tadyathā makṣikā madhukararājānamutkrāmantaṃ sarva evotkramante tasmiṃṣca pratiṣṭhamāne sarva eva prātiṣṭanta evaṃ vāṅmanaṣcakṣuḥ śrotraṃ ca te prītāḥ prāṇaṃ stunvanti || 2.4||

    Meaning

    Out of pride, Prana seemed to rise upward (to depart). When it rose, all the others rose too; and when it settled, all settled. As bees rise when the queen-bee rises and settle when she settles, so did speech, mind, eye, and ear; and, pleased, they praised Prana.

  5. Verse 5

    eṣo'gnistapatyeṣa sūrya eṣa parjanyo maghavāneṣa vāyuḥ eṣa pṛthivī rayirdevaḥ sadasaccāmṛtaṃ ca yat || 2.5||

    Meaning

    'This (Prana) burns as fire; it is the sun, the rain-cloud, Indra (Maghavan); it is the air; it is the earth, Rayi, the deity (god); it is being and non-being, and what is immortal.'

  6. Verse 6

    arā iva rathanābhau prāṇe sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam | ṛco yajūṃṣi sāmāni yajñaḥ kṣatraṃ brahma ca || 2.6||

    Meaning

    'As spokes (are fixed) in the hub of a wheel, all is fixed in Prana — the Rik, Yajus, Saman verses, the sacrifice, the Kshatriya and the Brahmana.'

  7. Verse 7

    prajāpatiścarasi garbhe tvameva pratijāyase | tubhyaṃ prāṇa prajāstvimā baliṃ haranti yaḥ prāṇaiḥ pratitiṣṭhasi || 2.7||

    Meaning

    'As Prajapati you move in the womb; it is you yourself who are born again. To you, O Prana, these creatures bring offerings — you who dwell with the pranas (senses).'

  8. Verse 8

    devānāmasi vahnitamaḥ pitṝṇāṃ prathamā svadhā | ṛṣīṇāṃ caritaṃ satyamatharvāṅgirasāmasi || 2.8||

    Meaning

    'You are the chief carrier (of oblations) to the gods; you are the first offering (svadha) to the ancestors; you are the true conduct of the seers, the Atharvangirases.'

  9. Verse 9

    indrastvaṃ prāṇa tejasā rudro'si parirakṣitā | tvamantarikṣe carasi sūryastvaṃ jyotiṣāṃ patiḥ || 2.9||

    Meaning

    'O Prana, you are Indra by your prowess; you are Rudra, the protector; you move in the mid-region; you are the sun, the lord of lights.'

  10. Verse 10

    yadā tvamabhivarṣasyathemāḥ prāṇa te prajāḥ | ānandarūpāstiṣṭhanti kāmāyānnaṃ bhaviṣyatīti || 2.10||

    Meaning

    'When you, O Prana, pour down rain, then these creatures of yours stand full of joy, (thinking) "there will be food to our heart's desire."'

  11. Verse 11

    vrātyastvaṃ prāṇaikarṣarattā viśvasya satpatiḥ | vayamādyasya dātāraḥ pitā tvaṃ mātariśva naḥ || 2.11||

    Meaning

    'You are a Vratya (the ever-pure), O Prana, the sole seer (Ekarshi), the eater (consumer of all), the true lord of all. We are the givers of (your) food; you, O Matarishvan (air), are our father.'

  12. Verse 12

    yā te tanūrvāci pratiṣṭhitā yā śrotre yā ca cakṣuṣi | yā ca manasi santatā śivāṃ tāṃ kuru motkramīḥ || 2.12||

    Meaning

    'That form of yours which is established in speech, in the ear, in the eye, and which is spread out in the mind — make that auspicious; do not depart.'

  13. Verse 13

    prāṇasyedaṃ vaśe sarvaṃ tridive yat pratiṣṭhitam | māteva putrān rakṣasva śrīśca prajñāṃ ca vidhehi na iti || 2.13||

    Meaning

    'All this, whatever is established in the three heavens, is under the control of Prana. Protect us as a mother her sons; grant us prosperity and wisdom.'
