Fifth Prashna

Verses

  1. Verse 1

    atha hainaṃ śaibyaḥ satyakāmaḥ papraccha | sa yo ha vai tadbhagavanmanuṣyeṣu prāyaṇāntamoṅkāramabhidhyāyīta | katamaṃ vāva sa tena lokaṃ jayatīti | tasmai sa hovāca || 5.1||

    Meaning

    Then Shaibya Satyakama asked him: 'Lord, if someone among men should meditate on the syllable Om until the end of his life, which world does he thereby win?' To him he said:

  2. Verse 2

    etadvai satyakāma paraṃ cāparaṃ ca brahma yadoṅkāraḥ | tasmādvidvānetenaivāyatanenaikataramanveti || 5.2||

    Meaning

    'O Satyakama, this very syllable Om is both the higher and the lower Brahman. Therefore the wise one, by this very support, attains the one or the other.'

  3. Verse 3

    sa yadyekamātramabhidhyāyīta sa tenaiva saṃveditastūrṇameva jagatyāmabhisampadyate | tamṛco manuṣyalokamupanayante sa tatra tapasā brahmacaryeṇa śraddhayā sampanno mahimānamanubhavati || 5.3||

    Meaning

    'If he meditates on the one element (a), being instructed by that alone, he quickly comes (back) into the world (of men). The Rik verses lead him to the world of men; there, endowed with tapas, brahmacarya, and faith, he experiences greatness.'

  4. Verse 4

    atha yadi dvimātreṇa manasi sampadyate so'ntarikṣaṃ yajurbhirunnīyate somalokam | sa somaloke vibhutimanubhūya punarāvartate || 5.4||

    Meaning

    'Now if he is united in the mind with the two elements (a + u), he is led by the Yajus verses to the mid-region, the world of the moon. Having experienced greatness in the lunar world, he returns again.'

  5. Verse 5

    yaḥ punaretaṃ trimātreṇomityetenaivākṣareṇa paraṃ puruṣamabhidhyāyīta sa tejasi sūrye sampannaḥ | yathā pādodarastvacā vinirmucyata evaṃ ha vai sa pāpmanā vinirmuktaḥ sa sāmabhirunnīyate brahmalokaṃ sa etasmājjīvaghanāt parātparaṃ puriśayaṃ puruṣamīkṣate | tadetau ślokau bhavataḥ || 5.5||

    Meaning

    'But he who meditates on the supreme Purusha with the three elements — the syllable Om in full — is united with light, with the sun. As a snake is freed from its skin, so is he freed from sin; he is led by the Saman verses to the world of Brahman. From this aggregate of living beings (Hiranyagarbha) he beholds the Purusha higher than the high, who lies within the city (the body). On this there are two verses:'

    tisro mātrā mṛtyumatyaḥ prayuktā anyonyasaktāḥ anaviprayuktāḥ | kriyāsu bāhyābhyantaramadhyamāsu samyak prayuktāsu na kampate jñaḥ || 5.6||

    Meaning

    'The three elements (a, u, m), when employed separately, are subject to death; but when joined to one another, well applied in the external, internal, and intermediate acts, the knower does not waver.'

  7. Verse 7

    ṛgbhiretaṃ yajurbhirantarikṣaṃ sāmabhiryat tat kavayo vedayante | tamoṅkāreṇaivāyatanenānveti vidvān yattacchāntamajaramamṛtamabhayaṃ paraṃ ceti || 5.7||

    Meaning

    'By the Rik verses (one attains) this world, by the Yajus the mid-region, by the Saman that which the seers declare. By the support of Om alone the wise man attains that which is tranquil, undecaying, immortal, fearless, and supreme.'
