    Meaning

The gods breathe after the prana, as do men and beasts; for prana is the life of beings, and therefore it is called the life of all. They attain a full life who worship prana as Brahman; for prana is the life of beings. This (pranamaya) is the embodied self of the former (annamaya). Different from this self made of breath is another, inner self made of mind (manomaya). It too has the shape of a man. Of it, the Yajus is the head, the Rik the right side, the Saman the left side, the injunction (adesha) the trunk, the Atharva-Angiras hymns the foundation. On this too there is a verse.
