Verses
Verse 1
tadetatsatyaṃ mantreṣu karmāṇi kavayo yānyapaśyaṃstāni tretāyāṃ bahudhā saṃtatāni | tānyācaratha niyataṃ satyakāmā eṣa vaḥ panthāḥ sukṛtasya loke || 1||
Meaning
This is the truth: the (sacrificial) works which the sages saw in the hymns are variously spread out in the three Vedas. Practise them constantly, O lovers of truth — this is your path to the world of good deeds.
Verse 2
yadā lelāyate hyarciḥ samiddhe havyavāhane | tadā''jyabhāgāvantareṇā''hutīḥ pratipādayet || 2||
Meaning
When the flame flickers after the fire is well kindled, then, between the two offerings of clarified butter, one should cast the oblations with faith.
Verse 3
yasyāgnihotramadarśamapaurṇamāsamacāturmāsyamanāgrayaṇamatithivarjitaṃ ca | ahutamavaiśvadevamavidhinā hutamāsaptamāṃstasya lokān hinasti || 3||
Meaning
Whose Agnihotra is not followed by the new-moon and full-moon rites, the four-month rites, the harvest rite; is without guests, unoffered, without the Vaishvadeva, or offered against the rule — it destroys his worlds up to the seventh.
Verse 4
kālī karālī ca manojavā ca sulohitā yā ca sudhūmravarṇā | sphuliṅginī viśvarucī ca devī lelāyamānā iti sapta jihvāḥ || 4||
Meaning
Kali (black), Karali (terrible), Manojava (swift as thought), Sulohita (very red), Sudhumravarna (smoke-coloured), Sphulingini (sparkling), and the shining Vishvaruchi — these flickering ones are the seven tongues (of the sacrificial fire).
Verse 5
eteṣu yaścarate bhrājamāneṣu yathākālaṃ cāhutayo hyādadāyan | taṃ nayantyetāḥ sūryasya raśmayo yatra devānāṃ patireko'dhivāsaḥ || 5||
Meaning
He who performs his works when these (tongues) are shining, offering the oblations at the proper times — these (oblations), as rays of the sun, carry him to where the one lord of the gods dwells.
Verse 6
ehyehīti tamāhutayaḥ suvarcasaḥ sūryasya raśmibhiryajamānaṃ vahanti | priyāṃ vācamabhivadantyo'rcayantya eṣa vaḥ puṇyaḥ sukṛto brahmalokaḥ || 6||
Meaning
'Come, come!' — these radiant oblations carry the sacrificer by the rays of the sun, addressing him with pleasing words and honouring him: 'This is your holy world of Brahman, won by good deeds.'
Verse 7
plavā hyete adṛḍhā yajñarūpā aṣṭādaśoktamavaraṃ yeṣu karma | etacchreyo ye'bhinandanti mūḍhā jarāmṛtyuṃ te punarevāpi yanti || 7||
Meaning
But frail indeed are these boats of sacrifice, on which rest the eighteen (forms of) inferior works. The deluded who delight in this as the highest good go again to old age and death.
Verse 8
avidyāyāmantare vartamānāḥ svayaṃ dhīrāḥ paṇḍitaṃmanyamānāḥ | jaṅghanyamānāḥ pariyanti mūḍhā andhenaiva nīyamānā yathāndhāḥ || 8||
Meaning
Dwelling in the midst of ignorance, thinking themselves wise and learned, the deluded go round and round, afflicted, like blind men led by the blind.
Verse 9
avidyāyāṃ bahudhā vartamānā vayaṃ kṛtārthā ityabhimanyanti bālāḥ | yatkarmiṇo na pravedayanti rāgāttenāturāḥ kṣīṇalokāścyavante || 9||
Meaning
Dwelling in ignorance in many ways, the childish fancy 'we have accomplished our aim.' Because the doers of works do not know (the truth) through attachment, they fall, their worlds exhausted, and become wretched.
Verse 10
iṣṭāpūrtaṃ manyamānā variṣṭhaṃ nānyacchreyo vedayante pramūḍhāḥ | nākasya pṛṣṭhe te sukṛte'nubhūtvemaṃ lokaṃ hīnataraṃ vā viśanti || 10||
Meaning
Regarding sacrifice and good works as the best, the deluded know nothing better. Having enjoyed (the fruit) on the height of heaven won by good deeds, they enter again this world or a lower one.
Verse 11
tapaḥśraddhe ye hyupavasantyaraṇye śāntā vidvāṃso bhaikṣyacaryāṃ carantaḥ | sūryadvāreṇa te virajāḥ prayānti yatrāmṛtaḥ sa puruṣo hyavyayātmā || 11||
Meaning
But those who practise tapas and faith in the forest, tranquil and wise, living on alms — they depart, free from passion, through the door of the sun, to where dwells the immortal, imperishable Purusha.
Verse 12
parīkṣya lokān karmacitān brāhmaṇo nirvedamāyānnāstyakṛtaḥ kṛtena | tadvijñānārthaṃ sa gurumevābhigacchet samitpāṇiḥ śrotriyaṃ brahmaniṣṭham || 12||
Meaning
Having examined the worlds won by works, let the Brahmana arrive at dispassion: the uncreated (eternal) is not (gained) by the created (by works). To know That, let him, fuel in hand, approach a teacher who is learned in the Vedas and established in Brahman.
Verse 13
tasmai sa vidvānupasannāya samyak praśāntacittāya śamānvitāya | yenākṣaraṃ puruṣaṃ veda satyaṃ provāca tāṃ tattvato brahmavidyām || 13||
Meaning
To him who has thus approached, whose mind is tranquil and who has attained peace, the wise teacher should rightly teach that knowledge of Brahman by which one knows the true, imperishable Purusha.
