Verse 1
वेदमनूच्याचार्योन्तेवासिनमनुशास्ति । सत्यं वद । धर्मं चर । स्वाध्यायान्मा प्रमदः । आचार्याय प्रियं धनमाहृत्य प्रजातन्तुं मा व्यवच्छेत्सीः । सत्यान्न प्रमदितव्यम् । धर्मान्न प्रमदितव्यम् । कुशलान्न प्रमदितव्यम् । भूत्यै न प्रमदितव्यम् । स्वाध्यायप्रवचनाभ्यां न प्रमदितव्यम् ॥ १॥
vedamanūcyācāryontevāsinamanuśāsti | satyaṃ vada | dharmaṃ cara | svādhyāyānmā pramadaḥ | ācāryāya priyaṃ dhanamāhṛtya prajātantuṃ mā vyavacchetsīḥ | satyānna pramaditavyam | dharmānna pramaditavyam | kuśalānna pramaditavyam | bhūtyai na pramaditavyam | svādhyāyapravacanābhyāṃ na pramaditavyam || 1||
Meaning
Having taught the Veda, the teacher instructs the pupil: Speak the truth. Practise righteousness (dharma). Do not neglect the study (of the Veda). Having brought the teacher his cherished gift, do not cut off the thread of progeny. Do not swerve from truth. Do not swerve from righteousness. Do not neglect your welfare. Do not neglect prosperity. Do not neglect the study and teaching (of the Veda).
वेद पढ़ाकर आचार्य शिष्य को अनुशासन देता है — सत्य बोलो। धर्म का आचरण करो। स्वाध्याय में प्रमाद मत करो। आचार्य को प्रिय धन (दक्षिणा) देकर प्रजा-तन्तु का विच्छेद मत करो। सत्य से विचलित मत होओ। धर्म से विचलित मत होओ। कुशल (कल्याण) से प्रमाद मत करो। समृद्धि से प्रमाद मत करो। स्वाध्याय और प्रवचन में प्रमाद मत करो।
Verse 2
देवपितृकार्याभ्यां न प्रमदितव्यम् । मातृदेवो भव । पितृदेवो भव । आचार्यदेवो भव । अतिथिदेवो भव । यान्यनवद्यानि कर्माणि । तानि सेवितव्यानि । नो इतराणि । यान्यस्माकंसुचरितानि । तानि त्वयोपास्यानि ॥ २॥
devapitṛkāryābhyāṃ na pramaditavyam | mātṛdevo bhava | pitṛdevo bhava | ācāryadevo bhava | atithidevo bhava | yānyanavadyāni karmāṇi | tāni sevitavyāni | no itarāṇi | yānyasmākaṃsucaritāni | tāni tvayopāsyāni || 2||
Meaning
Do not neglect the duties to the gods and the ancestors. Be one to whom the mother is a god; be one to whom the father is a god; be one to whom the teacher is a god; be one to whom the guest is a god. Whatever deeds are blameless, those are to be cultivated, not others. Whatever good conduct we have, that you should adopt, not others.
देव-कार्य और पितृ-कार्य में प्रमाद मत करो। माता को देवता मानने वाला हो (मातृदेवो भव); पिता को देवता मानने वाला हो; आचार्य को देवता मानने वाला हो; अतिथि को देवता मानने वाला हो। जो कर्म निर्दोष हों, वे ही करने योग्य हैं, अन्य नहीं। हमारे जो सुचरित (अच्छे आचरण) हैं, उन्हीं का तुम्हें अनुसरण करना चाहिए, अन्य का नहीं।
Verse 3
नो इतराणि । ये के चास्मच्छ्रेयांसो ब्राह्मणाः । तेषां त्वयाऽऽसनेन प्रश्वसितव्यम् । श्रद्धया देयम् । अश्रद्धयाऽदेयम् । श्रिया देयम् । ह्रिया देयम् । भिया देयम् । संविदा देयम् । अथ यदि ते कर्मविचिकित्सा वा वृत्तविचिकित्सा वा स्यात् ॥ ३॥
no itarāṇi | ye ke cāsmacchreyāṃso brāhmaṇāḥ | teṣāṃ tvayā''sanena praśvasitavyam | śraddhayā deyam | aśraddhayā'deyam | śriyā deyam | hriyā deyam | bhiyā deyam | saṃvidā deyam | atha yadi te karmavicikitsā vā vṛttavicikitsā vā syāt || 3||
Meaning
(Adopt the good conduct,) not the other. Whatever brahmanas are superior to us — for them you should provide rest, offering a seat. (What is given) should be given with faith, never without faith; it should be given in plenty, with modesty, with awe, with fellow-feeling. Now, should you have a doubt regarding any rite or any conduct —
(श्रेष्ठ आचरण का ही अनुसरण करना,) अन्य का नहीं। जो ब्राह्मण हमसे श्रेष्ठ हों, उन्हें आसन देकर (उनकी थकान दूर करनी चाहिए)। (दान) श्रद्धा से देना चाहिए, अश्रद्धा से कभी नहीं; प्रचुरता से देना चाहिए, विनय से, आदर से, सख्यभाव से। अब यदि तुम्हें किसी कर्म या आचरण के विषय में सन्देह हो —
Verse 4
ये तत्र ब्राह्मणाः संमर्शिनः । युक्ता आयुक्ताः । अलूक्षा धर्मकामाः स्युः । यथा ते तत्र वर्तेरन् । तथा तत्र वर्तेथाः । अथाभ्याख्यातेषु । ये तत्र ब्राह्मणाः संमर्शिनः । युक्ता आयुक्ताः । अलूक्षा धर्मकामाः स्युः । यथा ते तेषु वर्तेरन् । तथा तेषु वर्तेथाः । एष आदेशः । एष उपदेशः । एषा वेदोपनिषत् । एतदनुशासनम् । एवमुपासितव्यम् । एवमु चैतदुपास्यम् ॥ ४॥
ye tatra brāhmaṇāḥ saṃmarśinaḥ | yuktā āyuktāḥ | alūkṣā dharmakāmāḥ syuḥ | yathā te tatra varteran | tathā tatra vartethāḥ | athābhyākhyāteṣu | ye tatra brāhmaṇāḥ saṃmarśinaḥ | yuktā āyuktāḥ | alūkṣā dharmakāmāḥ syuḥ | yathā te teṣu varteran | tathā teṣu vartethāḥ | eṣa ādeśaḥ | eṣa upadeśaḥ | eṣā vedopaniṣat | etadanuśāsanam | evamupāsitavyam | evamu caitadupāsyam || 4||
Meaning
— then conduct yourself in such matters just as those thoughtful, experienced, gentle brahmanas there, who are devoted to dharma and not led by others, would conduct themselves. And towards those who are accused (of a fault), conduct yourself just as those thoughtful, experienced, gentle, dharma-loving brahmanas would. This is the command; this is the teaching; this is the secret of the Veda (vedopanishad); this is the instruction. Thus should one meditate; thus indeed should one worship this.
— तो उन विषयों में वैसे ही आचरण करना जैसे वहाँ के वे विचारशील, अनुभवी, सौम्य, धर्मप्रेमी और स्वतन्त्र (अन्य से अप्रेरित) ब्राह्मण आचरण करें। और अभियुक्त (दोषारोपित) व्यक्तियों के विषय में भी वैसे ही आचरण करना जैसे वे विचारशील, धर्मप्रेमी ब्राह्मण करें। यह आदेश है, यह उपदेश है, यह वेद की उपनिषद् (रहस्य) है, यह अनुशासन है। इस प्रकार उपासना करनी चाहिए, इसी प्रकार इसका अनुष्ठान करना चाहिए।
