    Meaning

If one knows Brahman as non-existent, he himself becomes, as it were, non-existent. If one knows that Brahman exists, then the wise know him to be existent (real). This (anandamaya) is the embodied self of the former. Now follow the pupil's questions: Does any ignorant man, on departing, reach that world? Or does any wise man, on departing, attain that world? — He (the Self) desired, 'May I be many, may I be born.' He performed austerity; having performed austerity, He created all this, whatever exists. Having created it, He entered into it. Having entered, He became the manifest (sat) and the unmanifest (tyat), the defined and the undefined, the based and the baseless, the conscious and the unconscious, the real (satya) and the unreal (anrita) — He became the Real, whatever exists. That they call the Real. On this too there is a verse.
