असद्वा इदमग्र आसीत् । ततो वै सदजायत । तदात्मान स्वयमकुरुत । तस्मात्तत्सुकृतमुच्यत इति । यद्वै तत् सुकृतम् । रसो वै सः । रसंह्येवायं लब्ध्वाऽऽनन्दी भवति । को ह्येवान्यात्कः प्राण्यात् । यदेष आकाश आनन्दो न स्यात् । एष ह्येवाऽऽनन्दयाति । यदा ह्येवैष एतस्मिन्नदृश्येऽनात्म्येऽनिरुक्तेऽनिलयनेऽभयं प्रतिष्ठां विन्दते । अथ सोऽभयं गतो भवति । यदा ह्येवैष एतस्मिन्नुदरमन्तरं कुरुते । अथ तस्य भयं भवति । तत्त्वेव भयं विदुषोऽमन्वानस्य । तदप्येष श्लोको भवति ॥ १॥
asadvā idamagra āsīt | tato vai sadajāyata | tadātmāna svayamakuruta | tasmāttatsukṛtamucyata iti | yadvai tat sukṛtam | raso vai saḥ | rasaṃhyevāyaṃ labdhvā''nandī bhavati | ko hyevānyātkaḥ prāṇyāt | yadeṣa ākāśa ānando na syāt | eṣa hyevā''nandayāti | yadā hyevaiṣa etasminnadṛśye'nātmye'nirukte'nilayane'bhayaṃ pratiṣṭhāṃ vindate | atha so'bhayaṃ gato bhavati | yadā hyevaiṣa etasminnudaramantaraṃ kurute | atha tasya bhayaṃ bhavati | tattveva bhayaṃ viduṣo'manvānasya | tadapyeṣa śloko bhavati || 1||
Meaning
In the beginning this was the unmanifest (asat); from that the manifest (sat) was born. That made itself by itself; therefore it is called the well-made (sukrita). That which is the well-made — that, verily, is the essence (rasa, the savour of bliss). For having obtained this essence, one becomes blissful. Who indeed could breathe out, who could breathe in, if this bliss did not exist in the (space of the) heart? For it is He alone who bestows bliss. When one finds fearless support in That which is invisible, bodiless, undefined, and abodeless, then one has reached fearlessness. But when one makes even the slightest separation in It, then there is fear for him — that is the very fear of one who (deems himself) a knower but does not (truly) reflect. On this too there is a verse.
आरम्भ में यह असत् (अव्यक्त) था; उससे सत् (व्यक्त) उत्पन्न हुआ। उसने स्वयं अपने को बनाया; इसलिए वह सुकृत (स्वयंकृत) कहलाता है। जो वह सुकृत है — वही रस (आनन्द-सार) है। इस रस को पाकर ही (जीव) आनन्दी होता है। यदि हृदय-आकाश में यह आनन्द न होता, तो कौन प्राण लेता, कौन अपान करता? यही (ब्रह्म) आनन्द देता है। जब यह (जीव) उस अदृश्य, अशरीर, अनिरुक्त, अनाश्रय (ब्रह्म) में अभय प्रतिष्ठा पा लेता है, तब वह अभय को प्राप्त होता है। परन्तु जब वह उसमें थोड़ा-सा भी भेद (अन्तर) कर लेता है, तब उसे भय होता है — वही उस (अपूर्ण) ज्ञानी का भय है, जो ठीक से विचार नहीं करता। इस पर भी यह श्लोक है।
