Anandavalli · Anuvaka 8

Verses

  1. Verse 1

bhīṣā'smādvātaḥ pavate | bhīṣodeti sūryaḥ | bhīṣā'smādagniścendraśca | mṛtyurdhāvati pañcama iti | saiṣā''nandasya mīmāṃsā bhavati | yuvā syātsādhuyuvā'dhyāyakaḥ | āśiṣṭho dṛḍhiṣṭho baliṣṭhaḥ | tasyeyaṃ pṛthivī sarvā vittasya pūrṇā syāt | sa eko mānuṣa ānandaḥ | te ye śataṃ mānuṣā ānandāḥ || 1||

    Meaning

Out of fear of Him the wind blows; out of fear the sun rises; out of fear of Him fire and Indra (act), and Death, the fifth, runs. Now this is an inquiry into bliss (ananda-mimamsa): Suppose there were a youth — a good youth, learned, most swift, most firm, most strong — and that to him belonged all this earth full of wealth: that is one measure of human bliss. A hundred such human blisses — (make one bliss of the human gandharvas).

  2. Verse 2

    Meaning

A hundred human blisses make one bliss of the human gandharvas — and (equally that) of a man learned in the Vedas and unsmitten by desire. A hundred blisses of the human gandharvas make one bliss of the divine gandharvas — and of the Veda-learned, desireless man. A hundred blisses of the divine gandharvas make one bliss of the ancestors (pitris) in their long-enduring world — (and of the desireless sage). A hundred blisses of the ancestors make one bliss of the gods born in heaven (ajana-devas).

  3. Verse 3

    Meaning

(— and of the desireless Veda-knower.) A hundred blisses of the gods born in heaven make one bliss of the karma-devas (gods who became so by works), who reach the gods through (ritual) action — and (equally) of the desireless sage. A hundred blisses of the karma-devas make one bliss of the (higher) gods — and of the desireless sage. A hundred blisses of the gods make one bliss of Indra.

  4. Verse 4

    Meaning

(— and of the desireless sage.) A hundred blisses of Indra make one bliss of Brihaspati — and of the desireless sage. A hundred blisses of Brihaspati make one bliss of Prajapati — and of the desireless sage. A hundred blisses of Prajapati make one bliss of Brahman (Hiranyagarbha) — and of the desireless sage.

  5. Verse 5

sa yaścāyaṃ puruṣe | yaścāsāvāditye | sa ekaḥ | sa ya evaṃvit | asmāllokātpretya | etamannamayamātmānamupasaṅkrāmati | etaṃ prāṇamayamātmānamupasaṅkrāmati | etaṃ manomayamātmānamupasaṅkrāmati | etaṃ vijñānamayamātmānamupasaṅkrāmati | etamānandamayamātmānamupasaṅkrāmati | tadapyeṣa śloko bhavati || 5||

    Meaning

He who is here in the man, and He who is yonder in the sun — He is one. He who knows this, on departing from this world, reaches (in turn) this self made of food, this self made of breath, this self made of mind, this self made of understanding, this self made of bliss. On this too there is a verse.
