Verse 1
यतो वाचो निवर्तन्ते । अप्राप्य मनसा सह । आनन्दं ब्रह्मणो विद्वान् । न बिभेति कुतश्चनेति । एतंह वाव न तपति । किमहंसाधु नाकरवम् । किमहं पापमकरवमिति । स य एवं विद्वानेते आत्मान स्पृणुते । उभे ह्येवैष एते आत्मान स्पृणुते । य एवं वेद । इत्युपनिषत् ॥ १॥
yato vāco nivartante | aprāpya manasā saha | ānandaṃ brahmaṇo vidvān | na bibheti kutaścaneti | etaṃha vāva na tapati | kimahaṃsādhu nākaravam | kimahaṃ pāpamakaravamiti | sa ya evaṃ vidvānete ātmāna spṛṇute | ubhe hyevaiṣa ete ātmāna spṛṇute | ya evaṃ veda | ityupaniṣat || 1||
Meaning
That from which words turn back, together with the mind, unable to reach it — he who knows that bliss of Brahman fears nothing whatsoever. Such a one is not tormented by the thoughts 'Why did I not do the good? Why did I do the evil?' He who knows this regards both these as the Self; indeed he cherishes both these as the Self. Such, indeed, is the secret teaching (upanishad).
जहाँ से वाणी मन के साथ लौट आती है, उसे न पाकर — जो ब्रह्म के उस आनन्द को जानता है, वह किसी से भी भयभीत नहीं होता। उसे 'मैंने शुभ कर्म क्यों न किया? मैंने पाप क्यों किया?' — ये विचार सन्तप्त नहीं करते। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह इन दोनों (शुभ-अशुभ) को आत्मा रूप में देखता है; वह दोनों को आत्मा रूप में ही धारण करता है। यही (इस विद्या की) उपनिषद् है।
