Shikshavalli · Anuvaka 5

Verses

  1. Verse 1

bhūrbhuvaḥ suvariti vā etāstisro vyāhṛtayaḥ | tāsāmuhasmai tāṃ caturthīm | māhācamasyaḥ pravedayate | maha iti | tadbrahma | sa ātmā | aṅgānyanyā devatāḥ | bhūriti vā ayaṃ lokaḥ | bhuva ityantarikṣam | suvarityasau lokaḥ || 1||

    Meaning

Bhuh, Bhuvah, Suvah — these are the three utterances (vyahritis). Of them, Mahachamasya knew a fourth — Mahah. That is Brahman, that is the Self; the other deities are its limbs. Bhuh is this world; Bhuvah is the mid-region; Suvah is the world beyond.

  2. Verse 2

maha ityādityaḥ | ādityena vāva sarveloka mahīyante | bhūriti vā agniḥ | bhuva iti vāyuḥ | suvarityādityaḥ | maha iti candramāḥ | candramasā vāva sarvāṇi jyotīṃṣi mahīyante | bhūriti vā ṛcaḥ | bhuva iti sāmāni | suvariti yajūṃṣi || 2||

    Meaning

Mahah is the sun; by the sun indeed all the worlds are magnified. Bhuh is fire, Bhuvah is air, Suvah is the sun, Mahah is the moon; by the moon indeed all the luminaries are magnified. Bhuh is the Rik verses, Bhuvah the Saman chants, Suvah the Yajus formulas.

  3. Verse 3

maha iti brahma | brahmaṇā vāva sarvevedā mahīyante | bhūriti vai prāṇaḥ | bhuva ityapānaḥ | suvariti vyānaḥ | maha ityannam | annena vāva sarve prāṇa mahīyante | tā vā etāścatasraścaturdhā | catasraścatasro vyāhṛtayaḥ | tā yo veda | sa veda brahma | sarve'smaidevā balimāvahanti || 3||

    Meaning

Mahah is Brahman (Om, the Veda); by Brahman indeed all the Vedas are magnified. Bhuh is the out-breath, Bhuvah the in-breath, Suvah the diffused breath, Mahah is food; by food indeed all the breaths are magnified. These four are fourfold; the vyahritis are four and four. He who knows these knows Brahman; to him all the gods bring offerings.
